Slide Get Directions FHO is a surgical procedure we perform when other treatments for hip problems are not viable or successful. This operation involves removing the head and neck of the femur, creating a "false joint" to alleviate pain from conditions like hip dysplasia, severe arthritis, or traumatic injuries.
  • Indications: FHO is considered when pets suffer from chronic or acute hip pain not relieved by other methods. It is also suitable in very specific hip conditions that are or will result in fracture of the hip.
  • Procedure:
    • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
    • The femoral head and neck are removed, allowing the muscles and scar tissue to create a supportive pseudo-joint.
  • Recovery:
    • Post-surgery, pets often start using the leg within days or weeks, though full recovery can take months.
    • Rehabilitation is key, involving controlled exercise, physical therapy, and sometimes hydrotherapy.
  • Outcome: While the leg might not function as before, many pets regain mobility and lead pain-free lives, especially smaller dogs and cats.
